The poet and songwriter Francis Fahy, (Galway Bay was one of his songs) was born in Kinvara and produced his first play ‘The Last of the O’Learys’ in the Courthouse. Today it is used for seminars, exhibitions, and workshops for local artists. The Kinvara Mill is a two-stage windmill built in c.1790. It is now ruinous and roofless with no internal fittings. The small medieval oratory was built of large blocks of limestone. The church at the site may be pre-12th century with Romanesque decoration added during that century. Now an empty six storey well-preserved tower house in Tubber, it was built around 1574. Once noted to be the largest castle in Ireland due to the acreage its outer walls occupied. Maintained by the Dept. of Public Works, keys can be obtained from landowners and a short hike through the fields is worthwhile to find this hidden gem. The Slieve Aughty Centre is situated about 20-minute drive from Castledaly/ Kilchreest and offers visitors a phenomenal range of equine and other activities. It’s not to be missed if horses are your passion. Set in 350 acres of land, Dartfield welcomes visitors to take part in the many activities available, including horse riding, sheep dog demonstrations or clay pigeon shooting. Have you ever fancied learning how to do Stand-up Paddle boarding? Well now’s your chance – Wet Mongrel in Kinvara has everything you need to know about this exciting activity. While in the Kinvara area, pop over to nearby Traught Beach for a bracing swim in the wild and refreshing Atlantic. If you’d prefer to swim in an indoor pool, then try out the heated pool at the Swan Leisure Club, part of the Lady Gregory Hotel in Gort. One of the most beautiful lakes in the region is Lough Bunny where locals swim, kayak and do water-based yoga on a regular basis. You might like to visit and check the area out. There are no facilities at Lough Bunny, Boston and no lifeguard. If you chose to enter the water there, you do so at your own risk. North Clare Sea Kayaking Tour Company based in Doolin, some 30 minutes’ drive from Carran and 40 minutes from Kinvara offers a range of sea and lake-based tours and experiences for visitors to the whole region. Your route will take you along the foothills of the Burren and you will look out over Galway Bay and across to Galway city. Once at New Quay, you can either pop into Linnane’s for a delicious seafood lunch or cycle further along onto the Flaggy Shore and call to Café Linnalla for delicious homemade ice-cream before heading for home along the same route again.
